vyshyvanka dress

Vyshyvanka Very much

How to transform an otherwise dull outfit into something special plus we just love saying 'vyshyvanka'. The Vyshyvanka dress has been in our scrapbook for a while but we are revisiting ours as a jacket over jeans to take us through to Winter. Next Summer it will be belted around the waist to be a staple holiday dress once more. This Ukranian folk dress with its big sleeves and beautiful embroidery is a firm fave that will get plenty of mileage.

Gypsy chic influences this seasons bell sleeve trend

Gypsy chic influences this seasons bell sleeve trend

For those of us of a certain age there are a few rules that should never be broken, mutton dressed as lamb being one of them!  The very thought of a bell or lantern sleeve immediately conjures up over the top dressy, however the A/W pieces featuring this key trend are anything but.

So to be sure your look channels Jane Birkin cool rather than screams 'whatever happened to baby Jane' this on-trend cutsie style is safe in its simplicity. Keep everything minimal and let the sleeve do the talking. I bought a Ganni dress with bell sleeves a couple of years ago and it is still my go to piece when I want a simple easy daytime style with a twist. I'm definitely not channeling baby Jane!

Goth, but not as we know it!

Goth, but not as we know it!

Monochrome Victoriana, lace, velvet and ruffles - one at a time or all at once, anything goes. It's sounding like a potential fashion car crash and definitely not a style choice for the overs I hear you shout, but don't be scared it really can work in an elegantly chic, yet on-trend kind of way. A ruffled blouse with a denim or leather jacket, a lace dress with a badass heavy boot, vampy lace shoe boots with a cropped jean, pick your pieces wisely and combine with a little street style to totally rock an Alexander McQueen vibe.

Military Detail

Military Detail

It's that time of year when the winter coat search begins and once again the military trend reigns supreme. This time around however the spin is a tad more feminine. Wear your greatcoat over a silk shift or floaty skirt, with a belted waist, over floral pyjama pants or any combination of the above and give it the sass it deserves. The military coat is an investment power piece as it always makes an appearance on the fashion landscape in one form or another. Coat, jacket, dress whatever takes your fancy, just make sure there's some gilt, red pipping, an epaulette or an emblem or two!

Free People Military embellished Band Jacket £168

Paul & Joe Coat Florilege a military cocoon style £585

Cool military cape by Pierre Balmain £886

Belstaff Greatcoat £1,332

...and lastly a feminine nod to the military jacket with bows on!...

Claudie Pierlot £369

Apres Ski

Apres Ski

Around in both the '60s and the '80s as a fashion trend, who remembers the easy to wear ski pant? Actually I barely do as I was about 9 when I last wore a pair, however they are making a huge comeback, every designer and high street store will be stocking them come September, from Balenciaga to Top Shop there will be a pair to suit any budget. A versatile high fashion buy that will flatter all sihouettes when matched with a more generously proportioned top. Coupled with an oversized jumper and an equally high profile puffa jacket, the ski pant will be the wardrobe staple of A/W 2016. Wear with a heel and keep the stirrup showing to fully embrace the ski pant trend of the noughties.

Fendi stirrup ski leggings £490

Zara stirrup leggings £29.99

And look who wore theirs way ahead of the hype...

...You can't argue with the fashion pros!

Expertly layered

Expertly layered

Why haven't we done this before. OK, I know it was done in the seventies and probably constantly throughout the history of fashion. But why haven't I done this before. It is so darned simple. Slip dress over t-shirt in Summer, polo and jeans in Winter and any combination of the above in the awkward transitional seasons. Get creative with layering or keep it super simple. Keep an extra layer in your bag for when the evening gets chilly or mix heels and trainers to take the look from day into evening. I'm hooked.
